  Terrace Lodge is a comfy guesthouse in the very quiet mountain town of Putre. It is (now) owned and managed by a local Chilean couple. Elaina takes care... read more of the guests and her husband the grounds and infrastructure. Elaina is warm and friendly but doesn’t speak any English. Thank goodness for google translator because our Spanish is poor. The room was comfortable but we could have used a couple of extra pillows and we could not get the propane heater to work without Elaina’s help. Breakfast was fairly basic but enough to fill us up before heading up to Lauca. Elaina will make scrambled eggs if you ask. I believe her husband runs the tours in his 4WD Toyota pickup. We considered taking him up on the tour to the salt flats and hot springs but decided not to since it was fairly expensive and we already had had similar experiences in San Pedro de Atacama. Unless you decide to take this tour, one day in Putre is otherwise enough to see Lauca. There are several restaurants in the town center (a 3 minute walk). La Paloma and Canta Verde are both good (as recommended by Elaina). Also Walsuma if you want a hearty meal for the lowest possible price.

La coppia di signori che hanno preso in gestione il Lodge dopo la partenza dei precedenti gestori italiani conoscono molto bene la zona e tengono la struttura in ordine. Purtroppo le camere sono molto fredde, in quanto la stufetta a gas di notte va tenuta spenta per ovvi motivi, ma tutto sommato decorose nell'arredo e nel bagno.

  Lodge accogliente ai margini del paese, ma a 5 minuti a piedi dalla piazza centrale. Bella vista sulle montagne e park interno. Camera semplice ma spaziosa, con pavimenti in ceramica,... read more cassaforte, bagno ampio con acqua calda e phon. Il riscaldamento è impossibile da azionare in autonomia (deve intervenire la persona che gestisce il lodge) e per di più è a gas! Come risaputo, la fiammella del gas consuma ossigeno, che a 3500 mt. è già un po' rarefatto. Dunque, onde evitare brutti mal di testa, la notte bisogna spegnere la stufetta, come ci viene anche raccomadato dalla signora stessa (con la conseguenza che al mattino fa un gran freddo specie in bagno, per lavarsi). In sostanza si paga più che in altre strutture per la presenza del riscaldamento (che in inverno da quelle parti è importante), ma di fatto lo si può utilizzare molto poco! Colazione discreta: 1 fetta di prosciutto e 1 di formaggio, marmellata, 1 pezzo di torta, corn-flakes, biscotti, succo, tè e caffè. La signora che gestisce la struttura (la coppia di italiani non c'è più) è cordiale e disponibile, ma attenzione a prenotare escursioni tramite lei… Dopo averci proposto un'escursione con guida per 120.000 CLP, ci procura quel che invece si è rivelato solo un autista (seppur gentile e scrupoloso). A fine gita, prima di rientrare al lodge, tale autista dice di pagare a lui la tariffa, e ci chiede un tot. di soli 70.000 CLP!!! Ne deduciamo che la gentile signora voleva probabilmente ricavarci una "commissione" di ben 50.000 CLP (pari a circa 70 dollari!), senza neppure averci fatto firmare un contratto preliminare e averci mai rilasciato alcuna ricevuta! A causa di questa gestione poco limpida e per il riscaldamento a gas pagato ma di fatto ben poco utilizzabile (una stufetta elettrica avrebbe ovviato all'inconveniente), non posso quotare di più il lodge, peraltro carino ed accogliente.

Under new management, it lives up to its good rating on... read more Trip Advisor. The landlady was very helpful, giving us useful tips re dining options in town, our planned outings etc. (She only speaks Spanish but communication is easy).
The accommodation is no frills but clean and there is ample hot water and heating from 5 pm ( in the afternoon it’s warm enough).
Breakfast is adequate with a home made cake or fresh fruit salad provided.
The altiplano is a harsh environment: Terrace Lodge is a welcome stop in between excursions.

  Very puzzling experience - it appears that the owners changed (no longer Flavio and Patrizia). Most of the reviews on this site are outdated. The current staff does not speak... read more any English; they did not inform me about the breakfast hours, the breakfast hours stated in the information leaflet in the room do not correspond to reality. The rooms are clean, though small and dark. The staff kept shifting things on my table. The heating in the room was problematic to turn on (somebody always had to come to do it). Compared to the rest of Chile, breakfast is very basic, you always have to ask - why aren't there more things by default on the breakfast table? There is no complimentary tea or coffee outside of breakfast hours (you have to pay 1500 pesos). No shampoo in the room and only 1 towel per person. The place no longer offers any tours. Credit cards weren't accepted at the time of arrival. Guests are advised to save water but the hotel keeps watering the garden plants all day long. The staff is ok but knows little about hospitality, many things simply aren't complimentary, as they should be, especially at such altitudes. Next time, I will stay in the hostel nearby.

But even better than the coffee was Flavio's help with things to do in Putre. He provided us with a map and also took time to give us suggestions. We changed our plans based on what he suggested and we were so glad that we did! He has been running this lodge for 10 years now and is truly an expert in the area.

  The company is absolutely recommendable for tours in the Altiplano! We booked two tours: one to the Lauca National Park and one to the Salar de Surire. Both of them... read more were greatly organised. We went with four other travellers in a comfy minibus. Our driver Horiol was a reasonable driver and we felt safe in the car all the time. He also gave us - apart from all explanations to all mountains/churches/... - a great insight into Chilean life in the countryside. We met locals, had coca tea with them and could ask all the questions we were interested in!
Food was also very good on both tours! The highlight of our second day tour was a bath in the thermal pools of Polloquere in the middle of nowhere next to vicuñas and flamingos!

Acqua della doccia calda calda (e chi se l'aspettava?), camera non caldissima per via di una stufa che per ragioni di sicurezza non può stare accesa di notte, e tuttavia confortevolissima (le coperte sono molto calde e scaldano a sufficienza), colazione buona, tutta la struttura è uno splendido esempio di attenzione al dettaglio (in Cile, per la nostra esperienza, non è scontato neppure in alberghi con certe pretese!). Tuttavia la forza del Terrace Lodge sono i proprietari: ci hanno dato molti consigli utili sui giri da fare nei dintorni e anche in altre zone del Cile, consigli utili anche per cena e per fare buoni acquisti di souvenir. Si sono preoccupati di chiamare un tour operator con cui avevamo prenotato un tour una settimana dopo per verificare che non fosse troppo disagevole. Saremmo rimasti volentieri una notte in più. Die Gastgeber sind außerordentlich freundlich und hilfsbereit und kümmern sich sehr um die Gäste. Wer mit dem eigenen Auto da ist bekommt von Flavio jede Menge wirklich wertvoller Tipps für Tagesausflüge. Auch mit einem normalen PKW kommt man an die meisten interessanten Orte. Flavio weiß wo man auch mit PKW fahren kann. Die Lodge ist außerdem super am Ortsrand gelegen, dabei aber auch nur wenige Schritte vom Ortskern entfernt. Es gibt einige private Parkplätze auf dem Gelände. Wer mit dem Bus kommt kann auch hier Touren organisieren. Für uns war es einer der schönsten Aufenthalte während unseres Urlaubs in Chile. Ce manque de confiance, je peux admettre le caractère distrait de son épouse qui aurait pu vérifier avant de m'accuser m'a laissé un goût amère durant tout mon séjour. Concernant la chambre n °3, elle était simple, propre, avec possibilité de chauffage, un petit déjeuner correct.
